Discovering Germany: A Journey Through History, Culture, and Scenic Landscapes

Welcome to the Wanderers and Wonderers Travel Guide, the newest travel blog! My name is Maizie Anderson and I will be your travel guide on some new adventures while I help you discover one place at a time. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or planning your first trip, this is the place for you. Here, you’ll find reasons to visit, personal stories, and some details about the local culture that inspire wanderlust and help you make the most of your journeys. This week I will take you to a beautiful country that marries rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landscapes. Germany offers something for every kind of traveler. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or a foodie, there’s a piece of Germany waiting just for you!

Culture Shocked:

Experiencing culture shocks can be strange at first, but they also enrich your travel experience. By understanding and adapting to these cultural nuances, you’ll not only gain deeper insights into German society but also connect with locals in a more meaningful way!

  • Language
    • One major difference between the United States and Germany is the way we communicate. In Germany, the first language is German while in the US, many people speak English. When speaking to the locals, they also are much more straightforward.
  • Celebrations
    • If you celebrate Christmas or are a big fan of holiday cheer, I would definitely recommend going in the winter months. In many of the major cities, namely Berlin, there are Christmas markets throughout the town where vendors sell everything from cookies to ornaments that are open every night from December through January.
  • Currency
    • When visiting you'll have to exchange your dollars for Euros! Understanding how to navigate this process can save you both time and money, ensuring you have more to spend on experiences rather than fees.

Foodies:
Germany is a treasure trove for food lovers, with a rich and varied culinary scene that reflects its diverse regions and cultural influences. From hearty traditional dishes to modern culinary innovations, there’s something for everyone. Here’s a guide to some of the most iconic foods you must try while exploring this vibrant country.
  • Traditional Meals
    • Included in the picture on the right is an example of a traditional meal served throughout Germany. It includes a piece of meat with gravy, sauerkraut, and a German potato dumpling. Classic German meals are usually heartier dishes.
  • Soft Pretzels
    • When you think of Germany, you immediately think pretzels! Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, they’re often enjoyed with mustard or cheese dip. Grab one from a street vendor or a local bakery for an authentic taste of German snacking.
  • Drinks
    • If you're a beer lover then Germany is a great place for you! I would recommend visiting Germany in the fall and heading out to Oktoberfest in Munich if beer is your jam! It showcases many breweries with a lively atmosphere. No matter what time of year you go though, Germany’s beer culture offers a delightful journey for enthusiasts and casual drinkers alike.

Places you must visit:

Germany is a land of stunning landscapes and picturesque towns, where history and natural beauty come together to create unforgettable experiences. From fairy-tale castles and breathtaking mountains to major landmarks full of history, here are some of the top spots and places to visit during your journey through this enchanting country.
  • Neuschwanstein Castle
    • This castle is one of the most iconic sights in Germany. This beautiful castle inspired Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle which is fitting with its gorgeous views! Visitors can explore its fancy interiors and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and forests. The mile hike or carriage ride up to the castle offers stunning vistas, especially in the autumn when the foliage transforms into a vibrant tapestry of colors.
  • The Glockenspiel
    • While it may sound silly, this clock tower is a definite must-see! Visitors will gather below the tower to witness this magical show! Adorned with Gothic architectural elements and beautiful carvings, this building is much more than just a clock tower. While you're there, also take the time to explore the beautiful city of Munich it's a must-visit and definitely my favorite city in Germany.
  • History Memorials and Museums
    • Germany’s history is very complex and expansive, leaving an indelible mark on the country and its people. For anyone wanting to learn more firsthand about this very important era, throughout Germany numerous museums and memorials offer insightful perspectives, honoring the past while educating future generations. Some of the most well-known are the Topography of Terror, Checkpoint Charlie, and the Berlin Wall all located in the city of Berlin.

From its breathtaking landscapes and vibrant cities to its rich history and delicious cuisine, Germany has so much to offer! I hope this beautiful country is the next place you visit. Stay tuned for next week as we head southwest. What German food would you want to try?
