A French Feast:

The culture surrounding French food makes dining an experience rather than just a necessity. With so many unique foods to try from heartier dishes to their famous pastries, the French know how to do food. Here are some things I noticed along with my favorites!
  • Bread
    • If there is one thing that is a must-try when visiting France, it is any kind of bread! This is an easy ask as baguettes can be found in almost any cafe or restaurant. Even at every hotel we stayed in baguettes and other types of bread were out at breakfasts. Whether enjoyed as a part of breakfast with butter and jam or used to make the perfect sandwich, French bread is a must!
  • Nutella
    • Now here is one thing that the French cannot live without! I had never seen Nutella be consumed in such large amounts and on everything at every meal.  It is always set out in big dispensers and can be found near jams, butter, and peanut butter. Another famous French food is crepes which are also often served with Nutella. Whether enjoyed at breakfast, as a midday treat, or as a late-night indulgence, Nutella truly holds a special place in France.
  • Pastries
    • From croissants, éclairs, macarons, and tarts, each pastry has something special to offer. Whether enjoyed at a café or from a bakery, French pastries are an essential part of the cultural experience, inviting you to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures of life in France. My favorites were the macarons so I recommend at least trying them!

Places That are a Must:

France, a country steeped in history, culture, and stunning landscapes, is a dream destination for travelers from all walks of life. The country offers many different opportunities to visit everything from art to landscapes all with great histories. Here are some of my must-visits that I think everyone should see at least once in their lives.

  • Eiffel Tower
    • Now I'm sure every blog or post you read about France will say to visit the Eiffel Tower which makes sense since it is one of the most iconic landmarks in history. Not only are the views from going up the tower beautiful, but just looking at the structure from afar is just as worth it. I also especially recommend seeing it at night when the whole tower glitters for the first five minutes after the hour every hour until midnight.
  • The Louver
    • This iconic museum, once a royal palace, is not only a treasure trove of masterpieces but also a stunning architectural landmark. Whether you're a museum and art person or not, spending at least an afternoon inside is definitely worth it. Some specific visits that I think are must-sees are the Mona Lisa of course, the Winged Victory of Samothrace, and the Venus de Milo.
  • Normandy Beach and Cemetery
    • As an American, visiting Normandy Beach and the American Cemetery is an important experience. This historic site not only has breathtaking coastal views but also serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made during World War II. You can feel the weight of history and the bravery of those who fought for freedom and see for yourself just how large of an impact this war had.

Cultural Differences:

Traveling to France offers an incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in a culture that is rich with traditions and etiquette that may differ significantly from your own. As you navigate the streets of Paris or the villages of Provence, being mindful of these cultural differences will not only help you connect more deeply with locals but also allow you to appreciate the vibrant tapestry of French life. Join me as we explore the intriguing cultural contrasts that await you in this beautiful country.

  • Language
    • This difference is similar to the one I talked about last week in the Germany blog. A difference between the United States and France is the way we communicate. In France, the first language is French and here in the US, many people speak English. Another difference is that when speaking, the French are very direct and say what they mean.
  • Pickpockets
    • While France is a beautiful destination, when visiting it's important to remain aware of pickpockets, especially in crowded areas like Paris and popular tourist attractions. To keep your belongings safe, it's wise to keep valuables close and secure, using crossbody bags or money belts that can be hidden under clothing. By staying aware of your surroundings and taking precautions, you can enjoy without the stress of losing your things!
  • Fashion and Appearance
    • As you stroll through any city in France, you'll notice a strong sense of style among locals. Nobody you see will be dressed in casual athleisure and instead, everyone will have put thought into their appearance, even for a quick trip to the grocery store. This commitment to fashion reflects a cultural appreciation for elegance and attention to detail, with many opting for jeans and blazers, chic accessories, and classic silhouettes that are on trend.

From its stunning landscapes and vibrant cities to its rich history and exquisite cuisine, France has so much to offer! I hope this enchanting country is the next place you visit. Stay tuned for next week as we explore England. Which French destination is at the top of your must-visit list?
